JavaScript and Java...?

Basics

Some of you may have heard of Java and thought about how JavaScript and Java could be connected on another level than just the name..

Java is part of JavaScript. There has to be a connection, right...?

Other than the name? Not really, no.

So what about the names then?

JavaScript started out as Mocha in May 1995 and was renamed to LiveScript some months later.

In December of the same year Netscape Inc. (the guys that developed JavaScript) and Sun Microsystems (the guys that developed Java) had a license agreement.

The idea was to make JavaScript a complementary scripting language to go with Java, which made Netscape Inc. rename LiveScript to JavaScript.

And that is the only reason why JavaScript has Java in its name.

Enough history, let’s continue.
